MG1, MG2, and eCVT
Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) system uses three key components for its transmission:
-
MG1 (Motor Generator 1) – Acts as a starter motor for the engine and a generator to charge the battery. It also controls engine speed and enables power split between the engine and MG2.
-
MG2 (Motor Generator 2) – The primary electric motor that drives the wheels. It also works as a generator during regenerative braking to recover energy and charge the battery.
-
eCVT (Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission) – A power-splitting mechanism that replaces a traditional transmission. It uses a planetary gear set to seamlessly blend power from MG1, MG2, and the engine, optimizing efficiency and performance.
This system ensures smooth acceleration, fuel efficiency, and the ability to drive in electric-only mode at low speeds.
